However, the Lockheed Martin-built F-35 has a "fantastic" equipment package, he added. Another major selling point is its sensor fusion, situational awareness and connectivity capabilities. It is designed to take out enemy aircraft long before they could get close enough to engage in a dogfight.
Although Russia has continued to court India, the Modi government announced plans to develop its own fifth-generation aircraft, demonstrating that it had no plans to purchase the Su-57. According to statistics from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Seoul's arms exports were 210% higher from 2016 to 2020 than in the previous five years - giving South Korea a 2.7% share of the world's global arms market.
The F-22 Raptor is probably the only operational stealthier aircraft than the JSF. But the radar cross section of the JSF is at its lowest when directly facing a radar. It then increases as the aircraft turns away from the radar presenting more of its side rather than front.
Not surprisingly, the Russian government has sustained a robust pitch to sell its current-generation combat vehicles and gain financial support through various advanced weapon co-development projects. The marketing and co-development of the Su-57 has been a poster child of this phenomenon.
India was the one country that had previously expressed interest in purchasing the aircraft and had entered into a joint development program with Russia in 2007. By 2018, however, India pulled out of the program due to continued delays in development, most notably the failure to
develop a second-generation engine, as well as disagreements over the transfer of technology. One report says Lockheed Martin labeled the F-35 a "fifth-generation" fighter in 2005, borrowing the Russian term to describe the F-22 Raptor. Previously, and even up to 2009, the JSF was referred to as a new or next-generation aircraft.
"It's not only what we build, it's how we build it so we can stay ahead of the threat," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown Jr. said recently at the McAleese & Associates annual defense programs conference.
"That to me is an important aspect, because it is the air superiority fighter of the future." Although the program is shrouded in secrecy, in September service leaders revealed that a prototype had already flown. The Air Force and its industry partners are leveraging digital engineering to speed development and facilitate future capability upgrades, officials say.
"The design incorporates many features which have been copied from the F-22 and F-35, including nose cone shaping, the electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) under the nose, and the side-mounted [diverterless supersonic inlet] intakes, ” the RUSSI report said.
However, "it is very difficult to assess the credibility of the sensor suite as claimed," the RUSI report said. "The rate of iterative development, testing and production also remains extremely high, meaning that while it may be a reasonable assumption that Chengdu have not yet solved the many challenges inherent in true sensor fusion and seamless passive sensor integration, future J-20B/C
variants will continue to close the technological gap with the U.S.”
